Nurs 6051: Transforming Nursing and Healthcare Through Technology
The Role of the Nurse Informaticist in Systems Development and Implementation
A system development life cycle (SDLC) is a process that breaks down the stages required to develop and implement a structured information technology system ( Ehrler et al., 2019). Since nurses work at the point of care in all phases of introducing new technology, they should involve themselves in transitioning to the latest technology, which will increase the nurses' interest in the SDLC ( AlHazme et al., 2015). The SDLC consist of five stages planning, analysis, design, implementation, and maintenance (Ehrler et al., 2019). The nurse plays a significant role in developing and implementing the SDLC (AlHazme et al., 2015). One way healthcare organizations can increase nurses' involvement and interest is to encourage them to take on a nurse informaticist role and be part of the implementation team (Furukawa et al., 2020) . Healthcare organizations developed the nurse informaticist role to give nurses an opportunity to learn about nursing informatics through training, practical experience, 2
and mentorship by a nurse informaticist ( Furukawa et al., 2020) . Nurse informaticists are essential in improving patient outcomes by using technology to successfully provide safe, effective, and efficient patient care ( Furukawa et al., 2020) .
A nurse leader trained in nursing informatics could develop and implement health information systems (Cummins et al., 2016). The nurse's involvement in the initial planning phase takes on supervising the project plan and managing the operations to ensure the successful development of the SDLC (Cummins et al., 2016). The nurses' participation in the planning phase helps identify areas that require improvement to increase quality patient care (Cummins et al., 2016). During the planning phase, the nurse leader identifies the project's scope, collaborates with the implementation team, and develops a comprehensive action plan that determines what will happen throughout the SDLC and its success (Cummins et al., 2016).
In the SDLC analysis phase, the nurse leader's role is to ensure a full analysis of the system's software, functional requirements, the team's skills, and identify potential gaps in developing the information technology system (Verma & Gupta, 2017). Healthcare organizations' information systems include admission, discharge, order entry, clinical documentation, and communication systems (Verma & Gupta, 2017). These are critical to the SDLC and require professional guidance as the data collected is analyzed in different clinical approaches (Verma & Gupta, 2017). Nurses leaders can work with the implementation team on the organization's SDLC design requirements (Verma & Gupta, 2017). Nurse leaders and staff nurses are responsible for breaking the stereotype of being portrayed as professionals who are unwilling to adopt the technology (Verma & Gupta, 2017). When nurse leaders are involved in the design phase, they
