COUN 6723: Multicultural Counseling
This counselor reviewed multiple panelists experiences in regard to multicultural issues.
The main issues addressed here are race/ethnicity, religion/spirituality, social class, and
affectional orientation/gender identity. Key concepts will be defined to establish a more
complete understanding. This counselor will reflect on how similar or different experiences have
impacted myself, as well as my emotional response brought on by empathizing with these
panelists.
The first panelist experience that I analyzed was that of Marcella Rolle. Marcella
identifies as Black. She was sure to make the distinction that she does not identify as African
American. Marcella details experience blatant racism in her childhood, as she was from the deep
south, and was the only person of color in her class for the majority of her school aged years. She
discusses how comments were made about her skin being “ashy” and being told that she would
never have a date to prom or a relationship with any boy from her school because “no white male
would be brave enough to ask her out.” Marcella describes microaggressions being a more
common experience in her adult life. She describes not being included in groups when she was in
her Master’s program, and being overlooked for promotions because she was “too aggressive or
assertive, and that the staff wouldn’t respond well to that.” Marcella describes being advised to
“tone down her personality” as a common microaggression that she experienced, and attributes
this to the stereotype of black women being “too aggressive.” (Laureate Education, 2019).
, MULTICULTURAL PANEL 2
Sue (et al., 2007), Defines Microaggressions as “brief and commonplace daily verbal,
behavioral, and environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that
communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults to the target person or
group.” Common themes that Marcella experienced in regard to microaggressions were
pathologizing cultural values/communication styles, and being treated as a second class citizen.
Pathologizing cultural values and/or communication styles is the notion that the values and
communication styles of the dominant culture, usually the white culture, are ideal and what the
expectation standard are should be set at (Sue, et al., 2007). This was clearly demonstrated when
Marcella was told to not be so assertive and tone down her personality. Marcella was treated as a
second class citizen when she was left out of group projects or passed up for promotions.
As someone who is very familiar with the privilege that being white can afford someone,
I would say that my experience is very different from that of Marcella. Culturally, I find that
being a Caucasian woman, I was intentionally taught to not be assertive or aggressive. This has
not served me well. I find that I am consistently encouraged to be more assertive in the
workplace, which makes it even more clear that Marcella was likely not passed up due to being
“too assertive” alone, but simply because it wasn’t liked when a black woman, in particular,
wasassertive.
Marcella also discusses how the racism in the south led her to a point of resentment for
southern culture at a point in her cultural identity. This was something that I could relate to.
While I have not experienced racism directed to me, I have certainly experienced frustrations and
anger in regard to racism being directed towards people of color and feeling helpless in stopping
it. When I was about 18 years old, and finally left the culture of my predominantly white high
school, I began to experience other cultures/ethnicities and get a more non-biased view of how
