Gun Control Act
The history of the United States has been more like a bumpy road than a smooth highway
for sure. Hurdles have come and go and one of the biggest hurdles is the misuse of firearms to
hurt or kill others. The topic of gun control has been a highly debated topic in present day
America. Because of the increasing amount of mass shootings among the community, we
regularly hear about the rights of gun owners and mainly hear about the need for stricter gun
control. The 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution gives us the right to “keep and bear arms”.
The Gun Control Act of 1968 was created not to breach that right but to protect the citizens from
certain individuals who have possession of firearms. The assassination of John F. Kennedywas a
key turning point in American history; that single act of fear helped pave the way for the need to
control the availability of certain types of weapons. Cracking down on stricter gun and licensing
laws may not effectively save lives, but not allowing certain individuals the opportunity to
possess firearms would.
Historical and Constitutional Basis
Our country was created with the Constitution in mind and upon the guidance of our
founding fathers. The second amendment is probably the most controversial of all the
amendments. Being able to own a firearm has become a way of life for many Americans.
Firearms have always had an important part in American history; with the assassination of John
F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Robert Kennedy, gun control became a topic that would
soon not be forgotten. The Gun Control Act of 1968 spent five long years in debate before
finally being passed by all three branches of government. The main purpose of this act states
that “convicted felons, fugitives from justice, habitual drug users, illegal aliens, dishonorably
discharged servicemen, persons who have renounced their U.S. citizenship, persons who have
