Research Question: How do government interventions and policies affect food deserts in

America?

I. Introduction

A. Although many scholars support government funded nutritional programs and report

positive effects the programs have on food deserts, the actual numbers are miniscule

when compared to the number of hungry individuals in these food insecure areas.

B. Because the problem of food deserts is twofold, new programs must be put in place to

assist with transportation or access to supermarkets and supplemental nutritional

programs need to be reevaluated to allow for more consistent eligibility and adequate

funds to purchase items.

II. Body Paragraph: Food deserts in America

A. Food deserts are areas in the communities that lack access to nutritional food due to

lack of income or access to resources.

1. “A food desert is defined as the general unavailability of healthful food in socially

disadvantaged and/or economically depressed geographic areas” (Ganong&

Harmon, 2019, pg. 40).

i. Food deserts are not limited to rural areas but can also appear in urban

surroundings. Food deserts are directly linked to poverty and low

socioeconomic areas.
