When we think about the government often, we forget how much of a role they play on
how we receive health care. “Healthcare policy involves the creation and implementation of
laws, rules, and regulations for managing nation's healthcare system. The healthcare system
consists of services provided by medical professionals to diagnose, treat, and prevent mental and
physical illness and injury. The system also encompasses a wide range of related sectors, such as
insurance, pharmaceuticals and health information technology” (Ballotpedia.org, n.d., para 3).
As you can see there is a lot of contribution from the government to develop health care policies.
One health care policy I would like to discuss is the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIPAA).
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act is better known to most as
“HIPAA.” Almost everyone is familiar with HIPAA due to it being applied to such a vast
number or health care requirements. Every time an individual is seen by a physician or receives
any type of health care treatment it is required to sign a form regarding HIPAA and this form
explains the client’s rights to them. So that brings us the to the true question of “what exactly is
HIPAA?” HIPAA is “The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)
is a federal law that required the creation of national standards to protect sensitive patient health
information from being disclosed without the patient’s consent or knowledge. The US
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued the HIPAA Privacy Rule to implement
the requirements of HIPAA. The HIPAA Security Rule protects a subset of information covered
by the Privacy Rule” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). HIPAA helps to
protect an individual’s privacy and right to keep their medical information private. It is a law that
has been passed to protect patient health records and information from being disclosed without
getting the patients consent or informing the patient of the release of the information.
