Title: Catching Fire
Author: Suzanne Collins
Number of pages: 391
Type of story
Dystopian, fiction/fantasy
It’s a fictional novel (made up story) about a nation called Panem. It takes place in a
depressive future. A world in which everything is terrible and looks like a nightmare. It is
called a dystopia. It is the opposite of utopia which means the ideal world.
Main themes of dystopian books are things like rebellion, revolutions, suppression, and
disaster like in this novel.
I think this story already happens in real life. It’s a simple version of our real world. The
Capitol has all the power and the luxury. In the districts there is poverty and they have to
work like slaves. In our world there are some governments that control everything and
disrespect the needs of the people. Now there are Rebellions and terrorist attacks, for
example in Middle East regions. And the difference in wealth is almost everywhere also in
our country.
Summary:
After Katniss and Peeta’s victory in the 74th Hunger Games their lives are wonderful. From
poor people to a wealthy ones. Her way of winning the games is the beginning of a growing
revolution. The president of the country blames Katniss. She needs to visit every district to
calm down the people. But her tour makes everything worse. When a good friend of her gets
tortured in the middle of a square she needs to interrupt. Because it’s the 75 th birthday of
the Hunger Games there is a special twist. All ex-winners have to go back in the arena and
she is the only female winner of district 12 So goes back with Peeta to the arena.
The arena is a big clock. Every hour there is a new disaster: angry monkey’s, poison fog and
a big thunder strike in a tree. Katniss and few others collaborate to increase their change to
survive. They made a plan to electrocute the other players but the mission goes wrong,
Katniss get injured and unconscious. When she wakes up she shoots an arrow against the
forcefield. This one explodes and Katniss gets unconscious again. When she wakes up, she is
in a hovercraft to district 13. The lost district that’s the base of the revolution group.
Characters:
Katniss Everdeen
Katniss is the narrator of the story. She is 17 years old and lives in the 12 th district. She is
strong, responsible and independent. She is a good hunter (she learned her hunting skills
from her father) and takes care of her family since the death of her father. She is very
protective to her younger sister and volunteers to take her place in the Hunger Games. She
also has rebellious traits for example: hunting is forbidden but she does it anyway and sells it
on the black market. So also saves Gale from beating up when she is on television.
