Factors that may disrupt normal fracture healing include all except: - ANSWER✔✔-
Internal fixation immobilization
The interior of a vertebra consists of what type of bone? - ANSWER✔✔-Trabecular
A fracture in which the bone is in normal anatomical alignment - ANSWER✔✔-Simple
How would you describe this type of fracture (Rotary)? - ANSWER✔✔-Spiral
What type of fracture is this? (Bloody) - ANSWER✔✔-Open
What type of fracture occurs as a result of nutritional deficits? - ANSWER✔✔-Trophic

,Osteocytes - ANSWER✔✔-Mature bone cells
Osteoblasts - ANSWER✔✔-A cell that manufactures
Osteoclasts - ANSWER✔✔-A bone cell which breaks down bone matrix
Trabecular (Cancellous bone) - ANSWER✔✔-Type of porous bone having large
latticework and a spongy, honeycomb appearance; filled with marrow
Matrix - ANSWER✔✔-the microscope substance of a tissue or cell. Intercellular
substance of cartilage, produced by cartilage cells
Compact (cortical) bone - ANSWER✔✔-dense hard layer of bone making up outer
surface of long bones; surrounds spongy trabecular bone
Cancellous (trabecular) - ANSWER✔✔-refers to the inner layer of bone that has a
porous, lattice-like, spongy structure
Periosteum - ANSWER✔✔-Divided into 2 layers. New blood cells are produced in the
inner layer of the periosteum. Nerve and blood vessels within the periosteum provide
nourishment for the underlying bone, but not sufficient to provide all the nourishment
needed by the bone cortex. Periosteum also helps protect the bone from infection. The
spaces in cancellous bone contain bone marrow
Medullary cavity - ANSWER✔✔-refers to marrow or soft marrow-like material in the

, Normal bone healing - ANSWER✔✔-A fractured bone should normally heal within 8 -
12 weeks. To ensure good healing, the fracture should be:
a. Properly aligned
b. Immobilized by internal or external fixation
Stage one of normal bone healing: Inflammation - ANSWER✔✔-The inflammation stage
of healing lasts about 2 days. A blood clot, called the hematoma is formed.
Stage two of normal bone healing: Cellular proliferation - ANSWER✔✔-The cellular
proliferation stage begins on the second day post-injury. Macrophages debride the
injured area. A fibrin mesh is produced which seals the edges of the fractured bones.
The fibrin mesh allows capillary and fibroblastic ingrowth. Fibroblasts and osteoblasts
form a periosteal callus.
Stage three of normal bone healing: Callus formation - ANSWER✔✔-The callus
formation stage continues for 3-4 weeks. During this stage, the bone fragments grow
together.
Stage four of bone healing: Ossification - ANSWER✔✔-The ossification stage lasts 3-4
months. The new tissue calcifies.
Stage five of normal bone healing: remodeling - ANSWER✔✔-The remodeling stage is
normal bone maintenance
