TTT L1. Truss Terms

Truss - answer A truss is an individual metal plate connected wood component
manufactured for the construction of the building, designed to carry its own weight and
superimposed design loads. Members form a semi-rigid structural framework and are
assembled such that the members form triangles.

Metal Connector Plate - answer Connector plate manufactured from ASTM A446, A591,
A792, or A167structural quality steel protected with zinc or zinc-aluminum alloy coatings
or their stainless-steel equivalent. The Truss Plate has integral teeth and is
manufactured in various sizes (i.e., lengths and widths) and thickness or gages and is
designed to laterally transmit loads when embedded in wood members. It is also known
as a truss plate, press plate, or metal plate.

Parallel Chord Truss - answer A parallel chord truss has top and bottom chord with
equal slopes. When used as a roof truss, the with top chord slope less than 1.5/12.
When used as a floor truss it is often called a floor truss.

Chase Opening - answer Open panel in a floor or flat truss set on a pitch for the
purpose of running utilities through it, such as heating and air conditioning ducts.

Truss Design Drawing - answerWritten, graphic and pictorial depiction of an individual
Truss that includes information required in ANSI/TPI 1.

Truss Placement Diagram - answerDrawing identifying the location assumed for each
truss based on the truss manufacturer's interpretation of the construction design
documents

Truss Spacing - answerOn-center distance between trusses.

Clear Span - answerGenerally indicates the inside or interior frame-to-frame dimensions
(horizontal distance between interior edges of supports). Not to be confused with out-to-
out or overall span.

Span - answerUsed to communicate out-to-out span of a truss design. Sometimes also
indicates centerline to centerline of bearing.

Bearing - answerStructural support, usually a beam or wall that is designed by the
building designer to carry the truss reaction loads to the foundation.

Interior Bearing - answerDescribes supports that are interior to two exterior supports.

, Top Chord - answerInclined or horizontal member that establishes the top member of a
truss.

Top Chord Bearing - answerBearing condition of a parallel chord truss that bears on its
top chord extension. Can also apply to a sloping chord truss bearing on a top chord
extension.

Bottom Chord - answerInclined or horizontal member that establishes the bottom of a
truss. An example of an inclined bottom chord member is the bottom chord of a scissors
truss or a truss positioned between supports at different elevations.

Bottom Chord Bearing - answerBearing condition of a truss that bears on its bottom
chord.

Web Member - answerMembers that join the top and bottom chords to form the
triangular patterns typical of trusses. These members typically carry axial forces.

Panel - answerChord segment defined by two adjacent joints. The panel length is the
distance between the centerlines of the joints.

Panel Point - answerLocation on a truss where the web members intersect the top and
bottom chord.

Peak - answerPoint on the truss where the sloped chords meet.

Splice - answerLocation at which two chord members are joined together to form a
single member. It may occur at a panel point or between panel points

Heel Joint - answerPoint on the truss where the top and bottom chords intersect.

Heel Height - answerTruss Heel Height is the vertical depth of the Truss at the outside
face of bearing. A high heel or energy heel is typically higher than standard butt cut. In
some cases, an end vertical is added to the truss to increase the depth of the heel even
further. This allows the installation of deeper insulation, which decreases heat transfer
or energy loss through this area.

Butt Cut - answerSlight vertical cut at outside edge of truss bottom chord made to insure
uniform nominal span and tight joints. Usually 1/4″

Cutting Sheets - answerDrawings of roof trusses prepared by the truss manufacturer
from the truss design drawings used to manufacture trusses. Also called a Truss Cut
Sheet or a Shop Drawing.

Overhang - answerExtension of the top chord of a truss beyond the outside of the
bearing support.
