Perfusion and Thermoregulation Lecture
Notes

What is perfusion? - answer Continuous supply of oxygenated blood through the blood
vessels to all body cells.

Cardiac output vs. Stroke volume - answer Stroke volume is the quantity of blood forced
out by each contraction of the left ventricle.
Cardiac output is the total quantity of blood pumped per minute. CO= stroke volume x
heart rate.

What system regulates the heart rate? - answer Autonomic

Arteries vs veins vs capillaries - answer Arteries- elastic, oxygen rich blood that is
carried away from the heart.
Veins- thin, non elastic walls, deoxygenated blood is carried to the heart, valves prevent
backflow (remember veins are purple)
Capillaries- microscopic vessels that are branches from the arteries and connect to
veins (they act as transporters)

Explain gas exchange in the body. - answerOxygen is carried to the tissues and the
organs. (inhale)
Carbon dioxide is carried away from the tissue and organs (exhale)
This maintains homeostasis.

What happens when there is poor perfusion? - answerOxygen and nutrients are not
getting transported properly. Low oxygen levels can lead to systematic damage. Poor
perfusion leads to poor wound healing which can cause a risk for infection. Nerve
system can be damaged.

What are some factors that affect perfusion? - answerPoor nutrition
Lack of exercise, obesity.
Family history of cardiovascular disease.
substance abuse and tobacco use.
stress
allergies
hot or cold temperatures
pregnancy :perfusing to two.
Medications
disease.
