, A. Leadership Style Evaluation
A Laissez-Faire leadership style is displayed when the leader allows the followers
to make decisions on their own. This is one of the leadership styles utilized by
the principal in the scenario. Aspects of the Laissez-Faire leadership style are
seen in his reaction towards the Language Arts department. He simply allowed
the Language Arts department to continue to work on honing the proposal after
they presented a possible solution to achieve better scores after their
brainstorming session.
The principle was tasked with finding a way to improve the reading scores. He
wanted a workable solution in place for the following school year. After he
shared the most recent reading test scores with the Language Arts department
they proceeded to hold a brainstorming session and came up with a proposal.
The Language Arts department proposed having required summer reading
projects along with summer reading assignments. The principal told the
Language Arts department to work together and to submit a detailed proposal
for him to consider. The Language Arts department figured out what they
wanted to do in order to improve the reading scores for the following year. The
principal accepted and implemented their proposal without any interference
from him.
A1. Leadership Style Recommendation
The leadership style that would have worked better in this scenario is the
Servant Leadership style. Unfortunately, the use of the Laissez-Faire leadership
style resulted in leaving certain stakeholders out of the decision making process.
The Servant Leadership style would have ensured that all stakeholders (internal
and external) were aware of the present situation. A Servant Leader would have
pursued meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders to determine the next course
of action for the benefit of anyone and everyone affected by the change.
The principal was aware of the school's mission, vision, and core values. He
made sure that what he was going to implement was in alignment with them.
However, he failed to consider how his implementation of the Language Arts
department proposal would impact the lives of stakeholder segments who were
not a part of the decision making process. A Servant Leader would strive to
have everyone who will be impacted by a decision to be involved in the decision
making process. This would mitigate any possible lack of cooperation from
certain stakeholders, (like the parents and students) upon the implementation of
the proposal. It is also very likely that having more stakeholders involved in the
process of change would have led to the avoidance of a lack of resources upon
implementation of the plan.
B. Applied Leadership Responsibility
The principal is the one person who should always champion the mission, the
vision, and the core values of the school. When a decision is to be made by the
principal he should always make sure that the decision is in alignment with the
