Page 23: Hegel considers world history as a freedom, where freedom is considered your self-
consciousness. With self-consciousness, Hegel’s version of God is a Spirit that has consciousness
in itself based on the past events that led to it. The Spirit is able to create itself into what it
actually is through actual and potential actions. By saying this, Hegel is relating world history to
the Spirit, meaning that world history is a public version of the Spirit to help others learn about
themselves. History can relate back to religion to reach the deepest part of the spirit, where
civilization is needed to help it become known. Because of this process, it can be considered the
reason behind why history takes a while to be made and explains how once history is made, we
need to trace back to what caused it to happen. Thus, it discusses the meaning behind the book
and what will be discussed in full.
Page 24-25: For different religions and cultures, they all had varying opinions about their
conscious freedom. However, man in itself has guaranteed freedom through Christianity even
though we need to know how to handle it.
By having freedom, we have to understand that the purpose in the world is to know you
have freedom. The spirit has to recognize that it is real, while physically there is no truth to
compare its realness to. Your freedom is what knows it is real and it needs to be noticed
consciously in order to have the knowledge about your own freedom. Freedom is needed by
everyone and everything in history to serve its purpose in the world or else it will only be
considering how freedom changed history rather than how freedom was able to grow and change
from history. For the world to be aimed towards its own person, God also needs to be recognized
for his impact and purpose. Since he is the perfect being, his personal will is able to see his
freedom and add to history through Christianity. Because of this, he is considered the idea of
freedom, since he inspired freedom in all creation and helped influence history.
Page 26: Because different desires can take over a person’s reasoning, as seen in Kant’s
discussion of people having reason and battling desires to find their entire worth, it is easy to
believe that history is only based on what we as people choose to act on, whether it is beneficial
or simply just interesting to us. Our reasoning needs to have these desires to form our own
freedom, or else we would not have the human nature that guides us to our freedom. Our desires
can form or change history, where we can indulge on how we choose to manage our freedom and
simply recognize this freedom. Without desire, our history of the human race would never have
the chance to grow. To Hegel, anyone who changes history has to be interested in the change that
they actively made or else it would only be out of self-interest.
Our will can lead us to doing negative things that impact history, which in turn impact
humanity too. Hegel believes that when someone has negative intentions, they are corrupted, and
we should all be sad because of our own morals. By saying this, he is saying that because we all
