advancing due to new innovations, this comes at a cost and by this it means cyber threats/attacks
“In 2023, the number of data compromises in the United States stood at 3,205 cases. Meanwhile,
over 353 million individuals were affected in the same year by data compromises, including data
breaches, leakage, and exposure” (Petrosyan, 2024). There are plenty of avenues for cyber
criminals to intrude on your network, computer systems or even our handheld devices many of
us hold dear to our hearts. Understanding the importance of being safe over the internet is
crucial, knowing what to look for, and how to protect yourself or your business is key to overall
success as cyber threats emerge. Looking at a data breach in 2021 that targeted “US Cellular” a
major cell phone conglomerate here in the United States who has “high-quality network to
customers with 4.6 million retail connections in 21 states” (UScellular, 2024), detailing the vast
amount of reach they have throughout the states. The breach was identified to have happened
around January 4th, 2021, but the breach wasn’t discovered until two days later “prompting the
company to reset employee passwords and remove the compromised systems from its computer
network” (Bizga, 2021).
Cause of Data breach
Data breaches can be caused by a variety of different ways internally and externally. One
of the ways can be brute force attacks, which comprise of the attacker trying to guess what the
passwords could be to gain unauthorized access to potential sensitive information. In the case of
the 2021 breach for the cell phone company US Cellular, this data breach was completed by the
use of malware which involved “employees in retail stores were successfully scammed by
