Assignment 2 IDRL 215
1. Jason Greer video is a promotional ad for management that offers solutions to implement
union avoidance tools and to accomplish the agenda to reduce government and union
interference. Greer suggested the unions are “masters of creating chaos” and executing tactics by
identifying the pro-union staff and enlisting them to create friction between employees and
management, then report back to the union. This gives the union leverage and inside information
to coerce the majority of the employee to sign union cards.
Greer opening statement stated “do you want to know how to defeat union organizing
tactics?”, which lines with the neo-liberal perspective. On the other hand, Greer also suggested
that “management should get to know their staff and understand what motivates and concerns
them”.
By implementing such practices, this would assist in keeping employees engaged and
loyal. The narrative behind these specific practices leads to a progressive managerial and labour
management techniques which is a remedy that a managerialist would recommend. Greer
indirectly stated that companies should focus on strong leadership and improve their practices,
policies and procedures. Conversely, if these practices are implemented it would minimize
employee desire to sign union cards, since union philosophy is to undermine management.
In my opinion, the video illustrates both neo-liberal and managerialist perspective but
leans towards the managerial side of unitarism. Since, the unitarism ideologies bring
management and employees to work together for a single goal, leaving no room for union to
exist (Foster, 2017, Lesson 4 notes).. The strategies encourage non-organizing unions' tactics but
continuously strengthen management relationships with employees. Therefore, the absence of a
unitarism view would suggest “If conflict is present they explain it as rooted in the irrationality
of workers, in poor communication between management and labour, and in lack of leadership”
(Foster, 2017, Lesson 4 notes). Finally, according to Godard article foundations, the importance
of this perspective is not solely a way to prevent unionization, but to enhance communication to
minimize conflicts and improve working conditions (pg.13). As this concept minimizes the
extent in which conflict would arise between management and employee, hence creating a
harmonic team.
