Realism● Core Assumptions:
a. States are the principal actors in world politics
■ Realists don’t look at corporations or organizations as individuals
■ Government type does not matter
b. Military power is the most significant information
■ Nation-states are always seeking more power
c. Nation-states exist in a condition of anarchy (the absence of a world government)
■ Nation with the most military power has the strongest voice
d. Normal state of affairs is war, and believes a nation-state is in a cyclical of either
■ Preparing for war
■ Fighting a war
■ Recovering from war
e. Human spirit / human nature is evil
● A good realist will understand how to prevent wars instead of constantly be fighting a
war
● Si vis pacem, para bellum -- if you want peace, prepare for war
● Why WWII?
a. Revisionists (Germany, Japan, Italy) are:
■ Rising in military power
■ Dissatisfied with its position in the pecking order / believes it should have
more respect, control, authority and should determine the outcome of
events
■ Willing to wage war to change its position in the system
b. Status-Quo Nations (USA, Soviet Union, United Kingdom)
■ Prefers no change in the global structure
● War is caused by a disagreement of power
● Realist concepts:
a. States
■ Objective state must-haves
● Territory
● Population
● Government
■ Subjective must-have
● The capacity to enter into international relations (“recognition to
others”)
■ If a nation is a member of the United Nations, it meets this qualifications
● Steps to become a member:
○ UN security general
○ UN security council (has the power to veto)
