I. Stress Key Terms:
1. Stress - The physical (body) & psychological (mind) response to traumatic or challenging
situations.
2. Stressor - Any factor that causes stress.
3. Stress hormones - Causes an increase in the heart rate and blood pressure.

4. Fight-or-flight response - The body’s physiological impulse to either fight off or flee from the

threatening situations.

5. Positive reappraisal (Positive Self-Talk) - The strategy of focusing on the positive aspects of a
stressful or negative thought or event.


II. Eustress (Positive) Vs. Distress (Negative) Events (What’s the difference? Identify an example
for each.)
The example for positive : “ Better days will come.”

The example for negative : “ All my days are / always will be bad.”

The difference is how the person spoke and the effect it has on them. The positive is better for that
person and their well-being, while the negative is more so pulling down that person and messing with
their mental health.

III. Acute Vs. Chronic Stress (What’s the difference? Identify examples and symptoms for each.)
Acute stress is temporary, while chronic stress is continuous. The body can function and manage
acute stress but chronic, harms the body.

Examples of acute stress : A final exam, pageant, election, last minute plans, and college
acceptances.

Examples of chronic stress are : Unsafe neighborhood, debt, and or bad households .

IV. Major Life Events Vs. Daily Hassles (What’s the difference? Identify an example for each.
Which one causes more overall stress? Why?)
Major life events are the most stressful in a person’s life, while Daily hassles create more overall
stress since they occur more often.
