Essay. Compare and Contrast Assimilation and Accommodation. Describe each and
how they differ. Then give a specific answer of each. Give a personal example of one
be sure to name which one you are describing. - Answers-Assimilation = new
information is taken in without changing existing scheme.
Accommodation = schemes are changed in response to new information.
Specific example:
Assimilation is when new information is taken in and fit within an existing scheme so we
can make sense of the information. With assimilation we may have little understanding
due to lack of experiences so information is categorized based off of what we already
know and understand. We categorize the new information and change it to fit within the
existing scheme. For example a child may associate every old man with a mustache as
grandpa.
Accommodation refers to the changing of a scheme when we recieve new information.
As new information is taken in through new experiences we are better able to
understand the information thus changing the scheme to better fit the new information.
For example as the child ages and interacts more with their grandpa they are able to
understand that not every old man with a mustache is grandpa.
My personal experience with accommodation would be the idea that every church that
clapped, raised their arms, or played loud music during worship must be church
associated with tent revivals, people falling to the ground, and filled with crazy people. I
was frightened by the idea of people dancing around and hollering while praising Jesus
since I came from a catholic upbringing and only an organ played the hymns as the
congregation sang along in unison. Something as simple as raising your hands during
worship would have been extreme in that setting. As I have aged an attended many
different types of churches, with many different types of worship my scheme of how to
act during worship has also changed. Watching people clap, dance, or shout during
songs at church I no longer view as extreme and now see it as just another way
