ESI Levels - ANS the higher the level, the more in danger the patient is; bases upon ABCs, risk
to life/organ failure, how may resources, and how long can the patient wait to be seen

ESI Level 1 - ANS requires immediate life saving interventions; unstable; EX - cardiac arrest,
intubated trauma patient, overdose, impending respiratory failure, not breathing

ESI Level 2 - ANS patient is in a high risk situation; is disoriented/confused, in severe pain,
distressed, or vitals are in danger zone; need to be seen within 10 minutes; ABCs can change
rapidly; EX: acute MI, multiple trauma victim

ESI Level 3 - ANS multiple resources are required to stabilize the patient, but vitals are not in
danger zone; unlikely threat of death, can wait up to an hour to be seen; EX: abdominal pain,
hip fracture, stable gynecological disorders

ESI Level 4 - ANS one or more resources are required to stabilize the patient; can wait to be
seen by the MD; EX - closed trauma, sutures, cystitis, lacerations

ESI Level 5 - ANS if patient does not require any resources to be stabilized; no threat of death
exam only; EX - cold symptoms, minor burn, prescription refill

triage - ANS rapid, focused assessment to categorize patients according to the most severe first
