Integrity: the quality of having strong moral principles and uprightness. Authority:
entitlement that is not questioned and need to be obeyed but also comes from fulfilling a
specific role. This role gives orders, make decisions, and enforce. Discretionary power: the
power to make official decisions by reason and judgement among acceptable alternatives
(Pollock, 2018). Integrity is doing the right thing when no one asks and sadly not all
authorities have integrity. Most of the time people with authority will abuse their power,
instead of upholding values and integrity, they miss use this power. Discretionary power
would be somewhat similar, some authority will come with discretionary power, which
integrity comes into play. People need to know and believe you are doing the right thing. The
roles of integrity, authority, and discretionary power are different between adult defendants
and juvenile defendants. The criminal justice system would be more likely to forgive a
juvenile offender. They will look at the crime committed, mental health and their age of the
juvenile. They would rather rehabilitate them and give them another chance with
opportunities to learn from their mistake. Some juveniles may not know what their actions
have caused, when adults do. Adult offenders can and do receive harsher punishments than a
juvenile when it's the same exact crime. An adult should know and understand bad actions
come to consequences.
One example would be an adult offender is driving reckless and not obeying the law. So, an
officer sees them and pulls that person over, then using his discretion and gives him a ticket.
