What are the 3 criteria to classify a major or minor crash? - ANS 1) Was any person killed or
injured?
2) Did any of the drivers leave the scene without providing their details? (In accordance with
Road Rules 2014 (NSW), Rule 287)
3) Was any driver involved under the influence of alcohol or drugs?
If YES to one or more of these factors, then it is classified a MAJOR crash.
What are the 8 priorities when attending a crash? - ANS 1) ATTEND - ASSESS - ADVISE!
2) Attend to the welfare of the injured.
3) Identify drivers and witnesses.
4) Breath Test DRIVERS where possible.
5) Establish the preliminary point of impact.
6) Ensure the free flow of traffic.
7) Investigate and record details.
8) Adjudicate on who is at fault and deal with such under relevant legislation.
What is the VERY FIRST priority at a crash scene? - ANS OFFICER SAFETY!
- Upon attending the crash scene, police IMMEDIATELY need to notify VKG that you are there.
THEN WE ATTEND - ASSESS - ADVISE.
- Does this crash require a police investigation?
- Do we need Ambos? Fire? Rescue services? Etc.
- Do we need more police cars at the scene?
ENSURE YOU LET RADIO KNOW!
Attending to the welfare of the injured: - ANS - You as police have a duty of care to ensure
appropriate medical care is provided! This can start with first aid and lead right up to calling for
an ambulance.
- Seek help from other police or bystanders if there are other burning priorities.
Identify the drivers and witnesses: - ANS - Drivers are required by law to stop and provide
relevant particulars!
- Witnesses are NOT REQUIRED to remain at the scene and may wish to leave. You need to
obtain their contact details for follow-up. (THE SOONER THE BETTER).
, Breath test drivers when possible: - ANS - UNLESS drivers conveyed to hospital.
- Breath test all drivers involved to eliminate or confirm alcohol as a factor.
- A POSITIVE reading will require further investigation.
Establish the preliminary point of impact: - ANS - Establish the EXACT locations of points of
impact for evidentiary purposes.
- This may be established when the vehicles are in situ (at location of crash)
- Remember, vehicles may have been moved prior to police arrival to ensure free flow of traffic.
Ensure the free flow of traffic: - ANS - Move any necessary obstructions SAFELY to prevent
delays in traffic.
- Investigations of serious crashes MAY require the establishment of a crime scene.
- Closure or diversion of traffic may need to be organised to manage disruption.
Investigate and record details: - ANS - Do this at an appropriate time.
- Only do this when traffic is freely and safely flowing and all parties have been established.
- Take the necessary information and particulars in your notebook.
Adjudicate and take appropriate action: - ANS - This involves taking appropriate
legislative/legal action against the driver/s who were responsible for the crash.

Road Rule 2014 (NSW), Rule 287 - ANS Duties of a driver involved in a crash:
• The driver of a vehicle involved in a collision is required to provide a verbal explanation of the
circumstances surrounding the crash, and this explanation should be recorded verbatim.
- The driver must stop at the scene of the crash and give the driver's required particulars, within
the required time and, if practicable, at the scene of the crash to —
(a) any other driver involved in the crash
(b) any other person involved in the crash, and
(c) the owner of any property or vehicles damaged in the crash
What should be included in a crash notebook sketch plan? - ANS - Names of the roads
involved
- North direction at the top of the sketch plan
- Depict all lane markings, signs, lights etc.
- Show initial direction of travel for all vehicles using arrows
- Number the vehicles (vehicle 1 being vehicle at fault).
