 Subduction of tectonic plates

So to briefly recap on subduction; for millions of years the earth’s tectonic plates have been
drifting and colliding into each other. This is also what has happened 150 million years ago
when the Farallon plate collided into the western side of the North American plate. The
Farallon plate was heavier however, which caused it to dive under the North American
continent, resulting in many of the geological features of the United States we know today.

o Subduction of tectonic plates: Grand Canyon + Earthquakes

The Grand Canyon for example is probably the most recognisable, with its depths of
sometimes approaching 2 kilometres. The Colorado river has carved its path in the Colorado
plateau that was squeezed upward due to the compression of the North American plate, after
the collision. Other well known geological features are the earthquakes on America’s west
coast, caused by the remnants of the Farallon plate further colliding into the North American
continent.

o Yellowstone
This site used to look really different, until a series of volcano eruptions occurred. The most
recent one was 600.000 years ago, which formed the now called Yellowstone National Park.
The heat source for these geysers comes from a magma hotspot that lays only 2 miles under
the earth’s surface. Therefore there is a lot of movement in the ground, you can ‘feel’ up to
100.000 earthquakes per day
o Rocky Mountains
The Rocky Mountains stretch from British Columbia in Canada all the way down to New
Mexico in the U.S.. → Making it a decesive factor for Northern America.
It divides whether fallen rain flows into the Atlantic or the Pacific ocean. The mountains act
as a shield for moist winds from the Pacific → causing dry conditions on the prairies on the
east.
Like the Grand Canyon, The Rockies formed through compression of the North American
Plate, which caused these mountains to ripple upward.

o The Appalachians
When the Appalachian mountains were formed over 480 million years ago they used to be
the same size as the Rocky Mountains. This was during the time that Europe, Africa and,
Noth-America formed one continent, as you can see in the picture. But a rift separated
Europe, Africa, and North-America which formed the Atlantic ocean. The size of the
Appalachians only became smaller because of natural erosion. (The water took sediments
from the mountains and flowed it back into the Atlantic ocean, as it still does to this day.)

o The Great lakes
The great lakes, or in other words the inland seas, are a series of interconnected freshwater
lakes, they are the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth by total area and the second-
largest by total volume, containing 21% of the world's surface fresh water by volume. They
began to form at the end of the last glacial period, as retreating ice sheets exposed the
basins they had carved into the land which was then filled up with meltwater. As you can see
on this picture.

o Meteorite impact crater
One of the most impactful events that happened in the US is a meteorite that made a huge
crater in the Chesapeake Bay. The crater was immediately filled with water. That’s why it
