Chapter 15: Treatment of Substance Use Disorders

Motivation to Change
● Treatment, planned activities designed to change some pattern of behaviors of
individuals or their families
● Spontaneous remission, resolution of a problem without the help of formal treatment
○ This happens frequently with smokers, although it may take a couple of tries
● Major barrier to change is the person's denial of the problem
● Research is now looking at the readiness to change instead of motivation
● Stages of Change Model
○ Precontemplation: not aware of the problem and have no interest in change
○ Contemplation: facilitate between the pros and cons of their behavior and making
changes
○ Preparation: on the edge of taking action and may have tried in recent past
○ Action: Setting goals and engaged in activities to change
○ Maintenance: continued use of behavior-change activities for as long as three
years
● Sometimes, people need external pushes for change if they cannot identify that there is
a problem on their own, may help them progress into the different steps

Changes without Formal Treatment
● Most people with such problems resolve them on their own more than using self-help
groups and professional treatment
