APPLYING CONCEPTS
ACTIVITY 12-1: CHECK WINDOWS PERFORMANCE STATISTICS
Estimated time: 15 minutes
Objective 5.4: Given a scenario, troubleshoot common issues with network services.
, Resources:
• Windows computer
Description:
Much of the data collected by environmental monitoring systems indicates health and status of individual
devices on the network, such as a server’s CPU usage, demand on memory resources, available storage
space, network throughput, and uptime versus downtime. You can access this kind of information for a
Windows computer in Task Manager. Complete the following steps:
1. Right-click the taskbar and then click Task Manager. Click the Performance tab.
2. Notice the numbers are changing constantly as you use your computer. Perhaps you’re playing
some music in the background or you have a social media site open that is frequently updating.
Take a snapshot of each screen as needed to respond to the following questions about your
computer:
a. What is your CPU’s utilization and up time? How many processes are currently running
on your CPU?
Answer: Utilization should be listed as a percentage (such as 25%), and up time should
be listed in days:hours:minute:seconds (such as 2:14:56:05).
b. How much memory is installed on your computer? How much of your installed memory
is in use?
Answer: Memory volume will likely be listed in GB, with available memory (such as
16.0 GB) being higher than memory in use (such as 10.2 GB).
c. How many storage drives are connected to your computer? What are your primary
drive’s read speed and write speed?
Answer: Most students’ computers will have one or two storage drives connected. Read
and Write speeds should be listed in MB/s or KB/s, such as 0 KB/s and 2.2 MB/s.
d. How many network connections does your computer list? What is the maximum possible
throughput for the primary network connection?
Answer: Most students’ computers will have one or two active network connections.
Possible throughput should be listed in Kbps or Mbps, such as 100 Kbps.
3. Click the three dots in the upper-right corner of the Task Manager window, and then click
Resource Monitor. Which resources are monitored in Resource Monitor?
Answer: CPU disk, network, and memory
ACTIVITY 12-2: IDENTIFY A PROCESS USING TOO MUCH NETWORK CAPACITY
Estimated time: 15 minutes
Objective 5.4: Given a scenario, troubleshoot common issues with network services.
