ASA 103 ATONS: Markers, Bouys,
Lights, Traffic, Charts
What a sound mark on a chart? - ✔️✔️This reflects the depth on the day the chart was
made during the lowest tide. It is the least depth you would anticipate at a location.
Know when your chart was made, the seabed changes!

What does one long blast mean? - ✔️✔️This means you are leaving a dock or
departing your slip. It signals to others a change in status and that you are getting
underway.

A prolonged blast is also sounded when a vessel is approaching a bend in a river where
vessels coming from another direction cannot be seen. It is sometimes referred to as
the "blind bend signal".

What do two short blasts mean? - ✔️✔️This means "I intend to leave you on MY
starboard side."

When you pass near another boat, you will maneuver by leaving them on your right side
as you pass. If you are behind another boat, going the same direction and about to
overtake it, two short blasts means: "I intend to pass you on YOUR port side, MY
starboard side."

Think of liquid highway lanes and passing lanes

What do Three Short Blasts mean? - ✔️✔️This means you are operating in astern
propulsion, does not necessarily mean you are backing up.

What does One Prolonged Blast + Three Short Blasts mean? - ✔️✔️One prolonged
blast indicates you are getting under way, followed by three short blasts (operating stern
propulsion) indicates you are backing up. This is what is sounded when you are
departing a dock in reverse.

This is technically two different signals in succession.

What do Five Short Blasts mean? - ✔️✔️This is the DANGER signal. It says, I am
unsure of your intentions!
Remember, when you approach another vessel and hear either one or two short blasts,
and you both understand their signal and can safely let them execute, you are then
required to respond with the same signal in response. If you don't understand their
intentions, or feel that their proposed maneuver is dangerous to either vessel, then you
are required to sound the DANGER signal.

, When crossing a traffic separation zone (aquatic center divider) what must be
considered? - ✔️✔️Avoid crossing, but if you must, cross at a right angle as quickly as
is safe and possible.

In reduced visibility, such as fog what are your obligations? - ✔️✔️Note your position
relative to your destination and plot a course for safe return to port. Post a lookout at the
bow. Rule 35g requires vessels under sail to make a sound signal of 1 long and 2 short
blasts at 2minute intervals. Vessels under power 1 long blast every 2minutes.

Rule 6 - ✔️✔️Every vessel must proceed at a safe speed taking into account
conditions.

All vessels underway must display the following lights: - ✔️✔️-Red on port
-Green on starboard
BOTH with an arc of visibility of 112.5 dgress from the bow to 22.5 abaft of the beam.
-White stern light

In a crossing situation, if you can see another vessel's red light, YOU are the give way
vessel.

What is a bouy? - ✔️✔️They float on water, are anchored to bottom

What is a beacon? - ✔️✔️They are fixed to the bottom of the bottom or installed on
land.

What do RED bouys and beacons represent? - ✔️✔️These designate the RIGHT side
of a channel or preferred channel for vessels entering from open water. They are
numbered with EVEN numbers that get bigger the further inland you travel.

RED RIGHT RETURNING
PASS THEM ON YOUR RIGHT AS YOU RETURN FROM OPEN WATER

As you travel toward open water the numbers countdown with Red on your left.
RED RIGHT RETURNING

What do a GREEN bouys and beacons represent? - ✔️✔️These designate the LEFT
side of a channel or preferred channel as its leads INLAND from open water. They have
ODD numbers that ascend as you head inland or away from open water.

PASS THEM ON YOUR LEFT AS YOU LEAVE OPEN WATER OR HEAD UPSTREAM.
RED RIGHT RETURNING

As you travel toward open water the numbers countdown, Pass them on your Right.
