I. One reason is I think that sometimes we as humans have a hard time vocally expressing

the way we feel or life experiences that we have gone through. Sort of like, we want to

have a reminder of those experiences for ourselves, but also to share them with other

people. Creating an artistic artifact is our way of expressing those feelings or capturing

those experiences. Possibly someone is going through or has gone through similar

experiences and might feel comforted in knowing they are not alone. The other reason is

that it is done for religious expression, I learned from studying my chosen artifact, a

statue of Tlaloc the Aztec’s God of Rain. People sometimes create the artifact to have a

place where people from the same religious beliefs can come together, worship, and

present their offerings also because they believe it is a way to please their Gods. In

module two we read an article called ‘Why We Make Art’ seven artists explain why they

create art and the one that stood out for me was Judy Dater she stated “I like expressing

emotions to have others feel what it is I’m feeling when I’m photographing people” she

also states “I think photographing people is, for me, the best way to show somebody

something about themselves—either the person I photograph or the person looking—that

maybe they didn’t already know” (Dater, 2009).

II. Creative expression is influenced by culture and also by religious culture. The Aztec

people created statues and other artifacts honoring their Gods because it was their belief

that they needed to do so to please Tlaloc (God of rain) so he would provide the rainwater

they needed to grow their crops. In the case of my artifact their creative expression was
