Luly Yang
Luly Yang is a Taiwanese- American fashion designer with a passion for butterflies. One of her pieces
is the “Monarch Butterfly Gown”, which launched her career and it is her signature piece. Several of
her pieces involve butterfly ideas. She also creates elegant bridal pieces.
She was first tasked to create uniforms for Alaska airlines, she was noticed for good designing and
created luly yang Design Group. She continues to create for partners and she says “Custom uniforms
is a great way to communicate a brand’s image and personality. This mirrors the same process that I
apply to my couture designs to express each client’s individuality.” With
the idea of individuality, butterflies, to her, represent individuality.
Her iconic piece is the monarch butterfly. The wings are digitally printed
onto silk taffeta and is made into a two piece gown, also hand placed
Swarovski crystals are decorating it. It also has ostrich feathers at the
neckline.” The dress is very feminine and is perfect for balls and formal
events.
JoEllen Elam
JoEllen Elam is a fashion designer combining fashion and fairy tales. She is the owner of Firefly Path
selling fairy inspired gowns. Her designs are elegant and mystical and
unique, some of which are quite elaborate. Many of her pieces include a set
of wings on the back. Her dresses have detailed bodices, some dresses are
decorated with flowers and crystals, some more simplistic with ruffled up
fabrics. They all have a very elegant princess theme to them.
I love her designs because they are very elegant, fairy-tale-like and
elaborate. Her different dresses incorporate different colours/ colour
palettes, accessories and overall theme such as many of her pieces are made
up of soft colours, romantic and very floral, decorated with her flowers,
however others have a more passion in
them and can give a fiery feel as some
are decorated with chains and made up of
fiery reds/ oranges.
The fairy wings are on most of her dresses and they have different
shapes and colours- each on suggesting a different emotion and
feeling. The wings give a very fantasy feel and complete the look
in terms of fitting into a fairy-tale.
Some of her pieces have a more sinister, evil
feeling to them such as this one on the right. This piece suggests a villain in a
story and makes a scary and dangerous impression. The combination of red
