WRITING TIPS
In this document you’ll find the different types of writings we’ll be learning this
academic year. In addition, these are commonly used in Cambridge exams (and
other official English tests), so it’d be pretty convenient that you become familiar
with them.
The present paper is divided into two different categories: text structure and useful
expressions. The first one consists mainly of the sections each type of text must
include and some general recommendations. The second one gets a bit more
specific; I’ll be giving you a few tips on how to improve your writing skills and
some expressions that’ll guarantee a more native-looking writing.
1. Different types of writings
a) Essay:
● 4 paragraphs: introduction, first argument, second argument and reinforcement,
conclusion.
● Formal language.
● Impersonal style.
● Talk about 2 out of the 3 topics.
● Give your opinion in an interesting way, be engaging.
b) Letter or email:
● It can be formal or informal. Pay attention to the exercise.
● Begin addressing to the reader properly (dear sir or madam, dear mister or miss
whatever, etc.).
● In the first paragraph give a reason to write.
● Finish the letter in a natural way by arranging to see or contact the reader.
● Pay attention to the final greeting (yours sincerely if you know the person or
yours faithfully if you don’t for formal letters // lots of love or all the best for
friends).
c) Report:
● Use headings: introduction, current situation, suggestions and final
recommendations.
● Formal and impersonal style.
● State the main purpose at the beginning.
● Reports are focused on current situations so it is really important to describe it
carefully and give details about how you got the information.
● You can use bullet points in order to give a detailed list.
● Finnish with a recommendation section (it won’t be as important as in the
proposal).
