-Ovarian Cycle during which ovulation occurs-Uterine Cycle during which menstruation occurs
Pre-embryonic - (first 14 days starting with fertilization)
Implantation - 7-10 days
Embryonic - embryonic membranes begin to form.
(Acts as a cushion to protect fetus, controls temperature, permits symmetrical growth, prevents
adherence of fetus to amnion, allows umbilical cord to be free of compression, Acts as a wedge
in labor, Provides fluid for analysis to determine fetal health and maturity)
Fetus at the end of the eight weeks, every organ system that will be found.
(full term = 37 weeks, 3000-3600 grams, 19-21 inches long)
(1 vein + 2 arteries = 3 umbilical cord vessels)
• Estrogen: cause the uterus to increase in size and weight, expands blood supply, increases
myometrial contractility, inhibits FSH production and stimulates LH
• Progesterone: often called the hormone of pregnancy because of effects on the uterus allow
the pregnancy to be maintained. Vaginal epithelium proliferates, cervical mucous plug
forms, and contractility of uterus is suppressed. Breast tissue increases in size and may
cause constipation due to relaxation of smooth muscle.
• Prostaglandins: primary job is to relax the smooth muscles and act as a vasodilator
Fetal Circulatory System
• Maintains blood flow to the placenta.
• Provides the fetus with oxygen and nutrients.
• Removes Carbon dioxide and other waste products.
Signs of pregnancy (subjective) (can be caused by other conditions)
• Amenorrhea
• Excessive fatigue
• Urinary frequency
• Nausea and vomiting
• Changes in breasts
• Quickening

G: Gravida - number of pregnancies including present pregnancy
T: Term - number of term babies born after 37 completed weeks of pregnancy
P: Preterm - number of preterm babies born after 20 completed weeks of pregnancy but before
37 completed weeks.
A: Abortion - number of pregnancies ending in either spontaneous or therapeutic abortions
