1 Kevin Johnson the former CEO of Starbucks coffee shop chain is one of the finest
ethical leaders who exemplified outstanding ethical leadership and demonstrated
exceptional ethical values. He first joined Starbucks in 2009 as a member of the board
of Directors and became the Chief Operating Officer in 2015. On the afternoon of April
14, 2018, two black men walked into a Starbucks in downtown Philadelphia and asked
to use a restroom. Since, they had not made a purchase, an employee refused their
request, so they decided to sit down and wait for their friend before ordering. Eventually,
they were asked to leave, and when they declined, the Manager called the police. The
men were arrested for trespassing, although no charges were filed. The incident went
viral, igniting widespread criticism on social media and sparking protests across the
country.
Johnson personally apologized to the two gentleman who were arrested as well as to
the Philadelphia community and Starbucks employees. In his apology, he promised to
learn from the event and announced racial bias training for all Starbucks employee to
help prevent similar occurrences in the future. By taking ownership and accountability
for this racially motivated incident, Johnson demonstrated his commitment to
