PSC 100 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Outline how the Mexican-American War, the movement of the Mormons into the
West, and the search for mineral wealth first brought settlers into what is now
Nevada
The Mexican American war had an effect on Nevada during the 19th century. The
Mexicans had control over certain parts of the country including California. This
ownership of land caused the Americans to want to explore this uncharted land that
they did not have. Even the Mormon migrating from the East helped the establishment
of Nevada. Brigham Young wanted to claim the state of Desert to be dedicated to
Mormons, which included Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Southern California, New Mexico,
Idaho and Colorado. However, he only got the state of Utah. Another main factor that
contributed to the settling of the Western States like Nevada was the discovery of gold
in California. This was a huge factor in why people migrated from the Eastern States to
the Western States. People migrating from the East to find riches in the West is a way
Nevada became more inhabited.
What factors contributed to Nevada becoming one of the first western territories
to gain statehood? (Pay particular attention to the efforts of national politicians
such as Senator Doolittle.)
There were many factors the helped contribute to Nevada becoming a western territory.
One of them being in February 26th 1861 the U.S Senate passed the Act to Organize
the Territory of Nevada that officially made Nevada a western territory. In the year 1863,
just one year after Nevada becoming a territory an election was called an election was
called in September to determine support for statehood and, assuming support the
selection of 39 delegates to a convention to draft a constitution for the state of Washoe.
When this election failed in 1863 there was another bill proposed on February 4th, 1864
by Senator James R. Doolittle. This bill passed both houses in Congress and was
signed by President Lincoln about a month and a half later. The reason this bill passed
so easily is it compromised both parties that were feuding against it.

, Outline and describe how the two main political parties (Democrat and
Republican) have fared over time in Nevada elections. What factors may be
contributing to the re-emergence of the Republican Party since the mid-1980s?
Democrats and the Republicans have fared over time in Nevada elections. From the
granting of statehood in 1864 until 1890, the Republicans dominated the state's
elections, this was primarily because of by the support of The national Republican Party
for Nevada statehood and the lingering effects of The Civil War, which had been fought
against the Democratic-dominated, pro- slavery states of the South. The Republican
Party dominated the political aspect of Nevada by a landslide. From 1908-1930, the two
parties were spilt when it came to political power, however the Republicans won high
spots at congressional, presidential and govermnetal levels. It was until the 1932 that
the Democrats started to take hold of the political power, because of the election of
Franklin D. Roosevelt to the presidency. From 1932 until the mid-1980s, Democrats
tended to dominate state politics with an overwhelming number of registrants and
control of the legislature and most of the executive offices. Then, in the 1980s the
Republican Party began resurgence in the state that because of changing
demographics of the state. Nevada's growth included a large number of middle and
upper income retirees often seeking out Nevada as a low tax haven. lasted through the
1990s and into the twenty-first century. By the end of 1995, Republican registrants had
overtaken Democrats for the first time since 1930. In present day, the new concern is
who the Hispanic population will vote for, since they are growing so rapidly.
Discuss how the Nevada constitution provides many of the same specific rights
and liberties as guaranteed by the United States Constitution. Give an example of
how a specific group has been denied full exercise of these rights and liberties in
Nevada. Given an example of how improvement has been noted for a specific
group in terms of achieving full exercise of these rights and liberties.
The Nevada constitution provides many of the same specific rights and liberties as
those expressed in the United States constitution. For example, some articles in the
Nevada constitution mirror many articles in the US constitution, specifically the Bill of
rights. Some of these articles, found in Nevada's constitution include; Section 3- Trial by
jury; waiver in civil cases, Section 5- Suspension of habeas corpus, Section 6-
