National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - ANS-Created in 1966 - mandates minimum
safety standards for automobiles, trucks, and their accessories - establish fuel economy
standards - administers state and community highway safety grant programs - conducts R&D on
new vehicle safety techniques - no other agency has such extensive control over a single
producct
Food and Drug Administration - ANS-Evolved out of authority established in the Food and Drug
Act of 1906 - 19 specific areas of responsibility: regulates composition, quality, safety, and
labeling of food, food additives, annd cosmetics; requires premarket testing of new drugs;
evaluates new drug applications and requests to approve drugs for expirimental use; develop
standards for the safety and effectiveness of over-the-counter drugs; inspect and license
manufacturers of biological products
