detects a loss of lubricating oil pressure and directs governor to shut down the diesel engine
Low water buton
located on the left front corner of the diesel engine near the GOVERNOR and is issued to detect a loss
of cooling water pressure. If the LOW WATER button will protrude from the GOVERNOR, and the
diesel engine will shut down. The GOVERNOR SHUTDOWN light on the control panel will be
illuminated and the locomotive will appear to have suffered a low oil malfunction. However, the LOW
WATER button will protrude to indicate the true cause of the shutdown.
Crankcase Over Pressure Button
Located at the left front corner of the diesel engine near the governor. It monitors the pressure in the
diesel engine crankcase. If pressure is detected the device will cause the LOW OIL buton to protrude
from the governor and the diesel engine will shut down. The GOVERNOR SHUTDOWN light ont he
control panel will be illuminated and the locomotive will appear to have suffered a low oil
malfunction. However, the CRANKCASE OVER PRESSURE button will protrude to indicate the true
cause of the shutdown.
Engine Overspeed
Located at the front fo the diesel engine near the GOVERNOR. If it detects excessive diesel engine rpm
it will shutdown the diesel engine. When the handle trips it points TOWARDS the ENGINEERS side of
the engine.
Engine Startup
* Place the isolation switch in the START-STOP-ISOLATE position
* Close the battery knife switch
* Turn on the Engine Run and Fuel Pump switches on the control stand
* All circuit breakers in the black area of the circuit breaker panel must be turned on
* Hold the fuel prime/engine start switch int he prime position until the return fuel sight glass is full
(the one closest to the diesel engine)
* Rotate the fuel prime/engine start switch to the start position
Conduct a locomotive air brake test when:
* Making up a locomotive consist
* Adding locomotive to a consist
* Other than rear locomotive is removed from consist
* Locomotive consist is rearranged
Locomotive Air Brake Test
1. With the independent and automatic brake valve handles in RELEASE position, apply the
independent brake.
2. After observing brakes apply on each locomotive, release the independent brakes.
