MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

 The male reproductive system is located in the pelvic region. It consists of
paired testes, several accessory glands, a system and a copulation organ
called the penis.

TESTIS

 Testis is the primary male sex organ .The testes are situated outside the
abdominal cavity within a pouch called scrotum. This keeps the testes at a
lesser temperature (about 2-2.5°C) than the normal body temperature. This is
essential for the maintenance and functioning of spermatogenesis tissues of
the testes.

 In adult, each testis is oval in shape, with a length of about 4-5 cm and width
of 2-3 cm. The testis is covered by a dense covering.

 Each testis has about 250 compartments called testicular lobules , each
lobules contains one to three highly coiled seminiferous tubules, in the
wall of which spermatozoa are formed. Between the seminiferous tubules in
the testis are the interstitial cells or leydig cells, which secrete male
hormone Androgen. The germinal epithelial lining of seminiferous tubules
consists of two types of cells, spermatogenic cells or spermatogonia and
serotonin cells or supporting cells.

 Serotonin cells are elongated and pyramidal and partially envelop the
spermatogenesis cells. Spermatogenesis cells divide several times and
differentiate to produce spermatozoa.

 Seminiferous tubules are in the form of loops, both ends of which continue in
short segments of straight tubules, the tubules recti. These tubules
connects the seminiferous tubules to the rete testis. From the rete testis 10-
20 fine tubules arise, ductility efferentes or Vasa efferentia.

 The tubules of Vasa efferentia combine to form a ducts epididymis. Each
epididymis consists of a single convoluted tube, which is highly coiled. The
storage and nourishment of sperms takes place in epididymis. In the head of
epididymis, the sperms undergo physiological maturation, acquiring
increased mobility and fertilizing capacity.
