NR 535: Week 4 Assignment: Preparing to Teach: Developing a Teaching Plan
Student’s Template
MSN Student’s Name: Amber Schlosser
Required information regarding target audience: The setting for my teaching plan as a nurse educator is the nursing professional role in the emergency department. The target audience for this lesson plan is the emergency department nurses that will use our form of triage using the Emergency Se verity Index (ESI). This lesson is taught to new graduate nurses beginning their careers in the emergency department and is a review for nurses tha t currently utilize this process. When teaching this,
an educator needs to be aware that these learners are adult learners. The design and execu tion of educational programs, especially those for healthcare
professionals, heavily rely on adult learning theories. There are differences in the applica tion of theories in healthcare professional education programs (Mukhalalati & Taylor, 2019). During this lesson, there will be barriers to from the audience tha t can influence the teaching-learning process such as anxiety, misinformation, and attitudes. For new graduating nursing entering the field of nursing, anxiety can be expected. Their increased anxiety can impact their retention of information that is provided. In attempts t o overcome this barrier, educators will find ways to assist with decreasing anxiety. Additionally, misinformation from senior nurses that currentl y practice this process can affect the teaching-learning process due to the learners having difficulty differentiating accurate information obtained during lessons a nd prior knowledge and experience. To overcome this barrier, educators will provide accurate information about this topic. Finally, atti tudes from learners that feel that this information is not important
can affect the teaching-learning process. This barrier will be addressed by identifying t he learners and setting rules and directions for the lesson. My personal learning philosophy is that learning needs to be a collaborative effort. As educators, it is important to collaborate with learners on their learning process and this can be completed by open discussions and collaborating with other learners . This can be used in this teaching plan by having an open discussion with collaborating with other learners on reviewing knowledge with questi ons about patients using ESI.
