· She was called the “First lady of Nursing” and the “First Truly International
Nurse”.
· Was born on November 30, 1897
· The fifth of eight children in their family.
· Was a native of Kansas City, Missouri but spent her developmental years in
Virginia because her father practiced law in Washington D.C.
· During World War I, Henderson developed interest in nursing.
· In 1918, she entered the Army School of Nursing in Washington D.C. and
graduated in 1921.
· She accepted a position of staff nurse with the Henry Street Visiting Nurse
Service in New York City.
· In 1922, she began teaching as a full-time instructor in Norfolk Protestant
Hospital in Virginia.
· In 1927, she entered Teacher College at Columbia University where she
subsequently earned her MA degree in nursing education.
· In 1929, Henderson served as a teaching supervisor in the clinics of Strong
Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York.
· In 1930, She returned to Teacher’s College as a faculty member and, until
1948, she taught courses in the nursing analytical process and clinical
practice.

· “Principles and Practices of Nursing”
- Beginning in 1939, she was the author of three editions of “Principles and Practices of
Nursing”.

, · “Basic Principles of Nursing”
- The “Basic Principles of Nursing” was published in 1966 and revised in 1972, has
been published in 27 languages by the International Council of Nurses.


· “Nursing Studies Index”
- The “Nursing Studies Index” is one of the prominent works of Henderson in 1963.


Principle and Practice of Nursing
· Henderson co-authored the fifth (1955) and sixth (1978) editions of
Textbook of Principles and Practice of Nursing.
· At age 75, she began the sixth edition of the Principles and Practice of
Nursing text.
· During her 50-year career in nursing, she fashioned a work that both
thoroughly criticized health care and offered nurses an opportunity to
correct the shortcomings.


Basic Principles of Nursing
· In 1953, she was completely rewriting the Harmer and Henderson Textbook
on the Principles and Practice of Nursing
· The Basic Principles of Nursing (ICN, 1960) became one of the landmark
books in Nursing


Nursing Studies Index
· In 1953, she accepted a position at Yale University School of Nursing as a
research associate for research project designed to survey and assess the
status of Nursing research in the United States.
· Henderson was funded to direct the Nursing Studies Index Project from 1959
to 1971, the outcome was the publication of the four- volume Nursing Studies
Index, the first annotated index of Nursing research published between 1900
and 1960.
