2024

Question 1 (See chapter 6 of the prescribed book.) (25)
Critically discuss the Bantu Education Act of 1953, and how students opposed
its promulgation in 1976.
The Bantu Education Act of 1953 and Student Opposition in 1976
The Bantu Education Act (BEA) of 1953 was a cornerstone of South Africa's
apartheid regime. It aimed to dismantle quality education for Black South Africans
and enforce racial segregation in schools. Understanding this act and the student
resistance in 1976 requires a critical analysis of its goals and the methods students
employed to oppose it.
The BEA's Segregation and Inferiority
• Racial Separation: The BEA segregated education, placing Black students
in schools separate from white ones. This inherently positioned Black
education as inferior.
• Funding and Resources: Funding for Black schools came from taxes
within those communities, resulting in a significant disparity compared to
the well-funded white schools. This lack of resources limited qualified
teachers, materials, and facilities.
• Curriculum Control: The curriculum under the BEA focused on manual
labor and subservience, downplaying critical thinking and academic
achievement. It aimed to condition Black students for menial jobs rather
than equip them for social or economic mobility.
Student Opposition in 1976
Black students in South Africa vehemently opposed the BEA's discriminatory
practices. The Soweto Uprising of 1976 stands as a pivotal moment in this
resistance.
