ASSIGNMENT 02: Short
stories
ENG1501
ASSIGNMENT 2
2024
, ASSIGNMENT 02: Short stories
This assignment comprises TWO sections. Both sections are compulsory.
ENG1501: Assignment 02, 2024
Section A: Reflective essay: The Short Story (Unit 3)
Reflective Essay: The Short Story
Studying Unit 3 of the ENG1501 study guide on The Short Story has been an
insightful experience, resonating with my own personal experiences and
memories of reading fiction. I have always enjoyed reading fiction and find short
stories particularly engaging as they provide a quick escape into another world.
Before undertaking this module, I have read various short stories, but one that
stands out as a favourite is "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. The shocking twist
at the end left a lasting impression on me.One particular section that I found
enjoyable and interesting in this unit was the discussion on the elements of a
short story. The guide explained that a short story should have a clear plot, well-
developed characters, and a strong theme. This insight has given me a deeper
understanding of what makes a short story impactful. For example, the guide
uses "The Sniper" by Liam O'Flaherty as an example to illustrate how the
elements of a short story work together to create a compelling narrative
(ENG1501 Study Guide, p. 45). Understanding these elements has made me
appreciate the intricacies of short stories even more.On the other hand, I found
the section on narrative perspective to be the least enjoyable as it was a bit
difficult to grasp initially. The guide explains the different narrative perspectives
such as first-person, second-person, and third-person, and how they affect the
reader's understanding of the story (ENG1501 Study Guide, p. 61). It took some
time to fully comprehend the impact of narrative perspective on a story, but with
further reading and reflection, I was able to grasp the concept. In conclusion,
studying Unit 3 on The Short Story has deepened my appreciation for short
