Choose any organization with a vision, mission, and/or goal statements. Describe all three
and evaluate them using the “triple bottom line” or any other tools from this week’s
textbook reading. Reformulate one of the statements based on your evaluation.
Companies prepare mission, vision, and value statements that reflect their purpose and overall
intention. A mission statement is a brief description of the firm’s purpose. It informs the
company’s stakeholders of the purpose and direction for which the firm is built (SHRM, 2022).
A vision statement is an ideal state the company wants to achieve in a prespecified future
(SHRM, 2022). It inspires employees and provides a common goal to work towards.
The value statement is a list of core beliefs and principles that shape and direct the organization's
culture and environment (SHRM, 2022). These values set the standard on which the
organization’s decisions are evaluated. As presented below, all three statements are interrelated
and support each other.
Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) is the largest commercial bank in Ethiopia with over 1000
branches and expanding at a rapid rate (Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, 2022). CBE has clearly
outlined its mission, vision, and core values and communicated them to its stakeholders
including customers, employees, government, and the public.
CBE’s vision is “To become a world-class commercial bank by the year 2025.” The mission
statement is to be committed to realizing stakeholders’ values through enhanced financial
intermediation by deploying the best professionals and technology. Finally, CBE has eight core
values that guide its internal conduct and its relationship with customers and shareholders
(Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, 2022).
These core values include integrity, customer satisfaction, employee satisfaction, learning
organization, teamwork and collaboration, public trust, value for money, and decentralization.
The above values define CBE’s ethical and operation principles and their focus on sustainability
issues.
A triple bottom line is a business approach that argues that firms should focus on social and
environmental issues while maintaining profitability (Miller, 2020). It presents three specific
measures which are profit, people, and the planet as a performance measurement for businesses
