ANALYSIS OF 4 BAR LINKAGE MECHANISM USING SOLIDWORKS

, Simple Four-Bar Linkage Mechanism

Objective: This experiment is to introduce SolidWorks Motion Software which we willuse to
analyze a simple 4 bar crank rocker mechanism.

, Introduction: Solidworks can be used to evaluate the performance of a mechanism by
simulating its movement. It allows for simulating the effect of forces, springs, dampers,
gravity and measures the kinematic and dynamic behavior of the system.
In this lab, we will create a simple four bar crank rocker mechanism to learn how to create
parts and motion analyze the mechanism.
The four-bar linkage is a mechanism that lies in a plane and consists of four bars connected by
joints that allow rotation only in the plane of the mechanism.
The four links include one coupler link, two side links, and a frame. A side link is called a crank if
it revolves relative to the frame, and a link is called a rocker if it doesn’t revolve. Based on
Grashof’s law, four bar linkages can be classified into 5 types shown below in Table1.1.
Table1.1 Classifications of Four –Bar Mechanisms

Case L+s vers. P+q Shortest Bar Type
1 < Frame Double-crank
2 < side Rocker-crank
3 < Coupler Double-rocker
4 = Any Change point
5 > Any Double-rocker

Where:
s= length of shortest bar
l=length of longest bar,

p,q =lengths of intermediate bar.

Procedure:
• Create Part 1 b following the steps in the lab manual using a CenterPoint slot with
dddddddddddd length = 0.2m and width=0.2m.
