 1947- Allies abolish the state of Prussia

The unification and development of Germany Politically

 German nationalism before 1871 had limited popular appeal
 KTP- 1848-9 revolutions
 Frankfurt Parliament also showed weakness of appeal
 Begins to look like Prussia (Bismarck) unified Germany not nationalists
 Bismarck had no time for Liberal nationalism

War
 Constitution made by Bismarck allowed Prussia to dominate politics until
1919
 Year of the three Kaisers- 1888- Middle Kaiser would have had a different
political regime
 However- we cannot dismiss nationalism’s role in unification- Bismarck
might have used/manipulated/needed nationalism in order to carry out
his ideals- used nationalism to get southern states to join North German
confederation/ Luxemburg crisis/ Indemnity Bill
 When nationalism reaches its third stage- relationship with Prussian state
becomes stronger- shared common goals
 Nationalist pressure groups begin to have influence over the Kaiser
 In 1879- Bismarck ends his relationship with the national Liberal party

German Economy

 Dominated/driven by Prussia
 1815- Prussia gains the Rhineland
 Prussia abolish tariffs within Prussia- 1818- first step towards free trade
 Prussia then built up treaties with neighbouring states- growing free
trade
 Zollverien
 Prussia invest in railways- economic and military growth
 1879- Tariff act driven by Bismarck
 Kaiser’s idea to grow the navy- Pan German League
 Franco-Prussian war boosts the German economy
 However- nationalism does have a say in economy- after defeat of Austria
Bismarck worked closely with the national liberal party to complete the
economic unity of Germany
 Krupp steel- their input on politics and decision to go to war
