Workshop exercises from CMR workshops in which Romain provided exercises to practice. In this file it is all put together in a nice overview to study the outputs and interpretation for the exam. I included last year's at the end for additional practice materials :)
I took the course last year but used the workshop exercises from this
year. I did include mine from last year at the end for some extra practice
materials 🙂
Workshop 1 & 2 are excluded as it focused too much on actual
computing rather than interpreting outputs and result sections.

,Workshop 3
Question 1
In the population, the average branded evaluation for beer is 7.4. Is our sample
representative of the population on average branded evaluation for beer A? Write the full
result section.
H0: m is equal to 7.4
H1: m is not equal to 7.4
p = .28, we cannot reject H0 (we retain H0 and reject H1)
Result section:
We tested whether the average branded beer evaluation for beer A is different than 7.4 out
of 10 (average in the population). Using a one-sample t-test, we find that the average
branded evaluation for beer A in our sample is not statistically different than the general
population (t(140) = -1.07, p = 0.289> .05). In conclusion, the average branded population
for beer A in this sample (m=7.26) is representative of the general population (m=7.40).
Question 2i
The researcher wishes to explore the relationship between (i) the evaluation for Duvel and
the blinded evaluation for Duvel; (ii) the evaluation for Duvel and the evaluation for Corona.
Choose the correct test, justify your choice, perform the test and write the full result section.
H0: correlation coefficient between Duvel and Duvel_blinded is equal to 0
H1: correlation coefficient between Duvel and Duvel_blinded is not equal to 0
Result section:
We performed a correlation test between the evaluation for Duvel and the blinded evaluation
for Duvel. We find that the correlation coefficient was positive (r=0.25) and significant
(t(139)=3.09, p=0.002<0.05).
, Question 2ii
The researcher wishes to explore the relationship between (i) the evaluation for Duvel and
the blinded evaluation for Duvel; (ii) the evaluation for Duvel and the evaluation for Corona.
Choose the correct test, justify your choice, perform the test and write the full result section.
H0: correlation coefficient between Duvel and Corona is equal to 0
H1: correlation coefficient between Duvel and Corona is not equal to 0
Result section:
We performed a correlation test between the branded evaluation for Corona and Duvel. We
find that the correlation coefficient was negative (r=-.02) and not significant (t(139) = -0.28, p
= 0.779 > .05)
Question 3
The researcher wishes to explore the relationship between nationality and preferred beer
category. Choose the correct test, justify your choice, perform the test and write the full
results.
H0: the distribution of preferred category is equal between nationalities
H1: the distribution of preferred category is different between nationalities
Result section:
We tested whether the preferred beer category (4 types) differ between the nationality (Irish
vs. Dutch). Results from a chi-square test showed that the preferred beer category was not
significantly different between nationalities (X(3) = 3.26, p = 0.35 > 0.05). More Dutch
consumers preferred Pils (32%) over IPA (25%), Stout (21%) and Lager (21%); while the
more Irish preferred Pils (43%) over IPA (22%), Stout (22%) and Lager (11%).
