Lesson 1: Specific Gravity, Density, Mass, and Volume

WHAT’S NEW

Instruction: Answer the questions below as directed. Let’s review for a second.

1. Can you tell me what matter is?
- Matter is found everything around us that has weight and take up space. Everything that
we see and touch is made up of matter. It is exist in a form of Solid, Liquid, Gas.
2. What is mass?
- Mass is he amount of matter that makes up an object. It is a fundamental property of all
matter. It effects the resistance of the body to change its speed or position. And
remember mass is different from weight because mass stays the same while weight
changes when there is a changes in gravity.
3. What is volume?
- Volume is the amount of space occupied by the three-dimensional object or the size of
the object. Volume is often quantified numerically using the SI derived unit, the cubic
meters.
4. Why do you think volume is important to you?
- Volume is important to me, in order for me to determine the total amount required to fill
specific object, like galloons or water bottle. And to know the specific unit of that
particular object.
5. How do you measure the volume of a solid?
- To measure the volume of a solid, just by the number of unit cubes it takes to fill up
the solid. It is measure in different formula which is according to its shape. The volume of
a solid is expressed such as cubic centimeters or cubic meters.
6. How do you measure the volume of an irregular shaped object?
- To measure the volume of an irregular shaped object, just by immersing it in water in a
container with volume markings, then observe how much level it goes up. You use
measurement tools like beaker or a graduated cylinder.
7. Do you think that the shape of an object changes volume? Why or why not?
- No, it doesn’t change its volume, because the volume remains the same even though
it changes in shape, as long as we don’t add any material or reducing the amount of
volume.

, WHAT’S MORE: LET’S WORK IT OUT
A. Solve the water density at 4 0C
1. D= 2000kg÷ 2 m3
D= 1000kg/m3
2. D= 4000Kg÷4 m3
D= 1000kg/m3
3. D= 6000kg ÷6 m3
D= 1000kg/m3
4. D= 8000 kg÷8 m3
D= 1000kg/m3
5. D= 10000 kg÷ 10 m3
D= 1000kg/m3
B. Solve the Gold density
1. D= 19300 kg÷1 m3
D= 19300kg/m3
2. D= 38600kg÷ 2 m3
D= 19300kg/m3
3. D= 57900kg÷ 3 m3
D= 19300kg/m3
4. D= 77200 kg÷ 4 m3
D= 19300kg/m3
5. D= 96500 kg÷ 5 m3
D= 19300kg/m3
C. If you change the mass and volume does the density of a fluid
changes? Solve: 1. D= 1000kg÷ 4m3
D= 250kg/m3

2. D= 1000kg÷ 2 m3
D= 500kg/m3
3. D= 600Kg÷ 3m3
D= 200kg/m3
4. D= 400kg÷3m3
D= 133.33kg/m3

D. Solve for the specific gravity of the following objects

Formula: Sp= Density of an object÷density of water
Note: Water density is 1000kg/m3
