and producing seasonal foods.
Lynford house farm (Agribusinesses)
- East anglia- large arable (crops) farm
- 570 hectares, high inputs of chemicals , machinery and other investments
- Flat fertile land is intensely farmed to maximise productivity and profitability
Malnourished- poor nutrition levels (too few calories/nutrients)
Water- growing food, drinking, washing, dispose of waste and industry
Average UK resident uses 150 litres of water/day
Energy- heating, transport, electricity
Food miles- distance that food travels from the producer to the consumer.
UKs energy mix has changed away from coal
(because of its CO2 emissions) and towards
renewables, despite the government removing
subsidies for solar and wind turbines.
The UK is not self-sufficient, which affects its energy
security because it is dependent on imported energy.
Fossil fuels are likely to remain important in the future
as:
- The UK’ remaining reserves of fossil fuels will
provide energy for several decades
- Cheap coal imports (Russia & USA)
- Existing UK power stations use fossil fuels
- Shale gas will be exploited in the future
Issue with fracking
Uk has natural gas underground in shale rocks. High
pressure liquids fracture the shale and release the
gas. (This is fracking)
It is controversial because it increases the possibility of earthquakes, it pollutes underground
water sources with high costs of extraction.
Demand for water
- Growing population, more houses
- Increase of water-intensive domestic appliances e.g. dishwashers etc
- Increased divorce rate- increases water usage within the family
