Unit 6 Assignment 2. Assignment 2 - Methods for Coaching & Development

Introduction

I have been given a trial period following a successful application for a full-time coaching role. As I will
be working with elite youth squads the Head Coach wants to see my planning for working with this type
of performer. As part of my job role, I will need to be able to deliver training sessions to the sports
performers to help to improve their skills, techniques, and tactics. I will research practices and
adaptations to promote performance and fitness in WTF taekwondo (Olympic Taekwondo).

Details of practices that can be used to develop skills and techniques in WTF taekwondo.

Taekwondo is a Korean style of martial arts that emphasises head-height kicks, spinning jump kicks, and
quick kicking techniques. "Kicking," "punching," and "the art or way of" are the literal translations for tae
kwon do. Permitted techniques in WTF taekwondo are fist techniques and foot techniques. A powerful
fist attack to the opponent's permissible trunk area, using the front part of the firmly clinched hand
while stretching the striking arm, is referred to as "fist technique." Any striking techniques that use the
part of the foot below the ankle bone are permissible, however any techniques that use the section of
the leg above the ankle bone, such as the shin or knee, are not. The striking areas in taekwondo are the
trunk and the head. The trunk is the legal attacking area covered by the trunk protector between the
armpit and the pelvis. On the areas protected by the trunk protector, fist and foot attacks are permitted.
The area above the collarbone is known as the head. To the head, only foot techniques are permissible.
Below will be listed the main techniques involved in taekwondo:

• Forefist - A closed fist can be thrust forward and struck with the forefist knuckles. This is an
advantageous position for general punches to the body's soft spots.

, (Wong, 2021)

• Front Snap Kick (Ap Chagi) - The practitioner brings their knee to their waist, draws their toes
back, and extends their foot fast at the target. This technique is meant to push the attacker
away.

, (Scher, 2015)

• Front Push Kick (Miro Chagi) - Miro chagi is a kick in which you use the bottom of your foot to
push your opponent away. It is like a Front Snap Kick in that the kicking knee is normally raised
first, pointing at the target, before the rest of the leg is extended toward the target. Depending
on the height of the target, the striking surface can be the ball of the foot, the full bottom of the
foot, or the heel of the foot.

, (Scher, 2020)

• Side Kick (Yeop Chagi) - A forceful kick in which the practitioner extends their leg while
simultaneously raising their knee and rotating their body 90 degrees. This technique is typically
used in WTF style taekwondo with the outside edge of the foot, though the heel may offer more
force.
