Unit 1:changing awareness of crime.
AC 3.3 Justify a campaign for change
I got 100% on this exam.
I chose to focus on domestic abuse because I believe there is a hidden figure of domestic
abuse statistics in Bradford. Bradford has a population of around 530,000, 20% of which
identifies as Asian/Asian British. I myself identify the same and have found that within this
culture many-especially victims-are unlikely to report abuse or even talk to others about it. I
believe this is an area requiring immediate addressing. Statistics show a rise in cases-that
do not mention the unreported cases-due to cultural pressure. If no one makes campaigns
like this to support and motivate victims then this behaviour a continuous cycle of abuse will
go unpunished and become normalised. My campaign intends to motivate victims to speak
out and not have to simply deal with and accept the abuse. My campaign will highlight the
issue that is the difficulty in reporting crime as well as the consequences of it and works to
result in a more efficient and safe method of reporting.
My campaign is called ‘SpeakOutAgainstDomesticAbuse!’ I chose this because my
campaign is specifically to motivate people-not just victims-to report signs of domestic
abuse. This meets my aim of raising awareness and providing information regarding signs of
domestic abuse, statistics and information about reporting. I felt that focusing on domestic
abuse in Bradford was important as I have personally seen many cases of domestic abuse
due to community pressure in Asian culture. Often, in our community individuals who speak
out are isolated or ostracised by their family and peers. It was made even more difficult to
report it during lockdown due to COVID-19. Police figures in 2020 found that offences
associated with domestic abuse have risen to 12,014 with the amount of domestic sexual
abuse cases rising by 30%, these do not include unreported and unrecorded crime.
Domestic abuse is often the main reason for mental illness including depression, anxiety and
others. Therefore my campaign was made in order to change and decrease the amount of
cases of domestic abuse in Bradford -and in the future all of England- by increasing the
amount of domestic abuse being reported and discourage others from committing it.
I used a variety of methods to spread my message including social media -twitter,instagram,
facebook-merchandise, events, posters, leaflets etc. First however, I made my logo and
slogan using software. My logo represents an oppressed person speaking out and is made
to not only empathise with victims but move the emotions of others who may witness
domestic abuse occurring. It represents someone who is not afraid to speak out despite
being threatened and therefore emotionally captures the attention of the audience). My logo
is following a colour scheme of purple, yellow and highlights of red. These colours are all
well known to represent certain concepts including red representing bravery and
power(everyone had a voice and therefore the power to speak out), purple which represents
courage and has been commonly associated with fighting domestic abuse for some time and
yellow, which represents hope.
My slogan is ‘by keeping silence, you are condoning violence’ which speaks for itself(rep[ort
domestic abuse) and utilises rhyme; rhyme is used in poetry to give the audience an idea od
what is omeing next, my slogan essentially foreshadows the negative consequences of not
reporting domestic abuse-some cases lead to permanent damage and sometimes even
murder. The language used encourages victims to speak out-it informs them that abuse isn’t
