Larger, usually polar molecules cannot pass through the hydrophobic cell membrane. So they
need carrier molecules to be transported across the membrane. In this case, the drugs that is taken
orally, may be large polar molecule so that it cannot be readily passed through the membrane of
gastro intestinal cell. So, it is transported across the gatsro intestinal cell by means of a carrier
which is usually a protein. Drug combines with the carrier forming a Drug-carrier complex. On
reaching the blood stream , this complex releases the drug to the blood stream, making the carrier
free to transport another drug molecule. Thus carier protein trasport the drug across the lipid
bilayer of the gastro intestinal cell to reach the blood stream.
