Social disorganization theory

The social disorganization theory was developed by a Chicago school and all that this

theory is about is the ecological setting of an individual that determines their behaviour. The

theory states that the environment and the neighbourhood that an individual lives in highly

determine if the individual will be engaged in illegal activities or not. From the theory, various

studies were conducted and the conclusion was that there were specific areas or regions where

the crimes were of a higher rate as compared to other regions. At the same time, these criminal

activities had projected trends over which the society or community under question was always

involved in criminal activities there as other neighbourhoods that had fewer rates of criminal

activities continued to record low crime rates (Jones, 2017). At the same time, the movement of

individuals from these regions to other regions resulted to lower criminal activities' engagement

by the same individuals. On the same note, the theory noted that when individuals were moved to

these regions, they also started to engage in criminal activities just like the locals. This, therefore,

implies that the ecological setting and neighbourhood of an individual determines the level at

which they will involve themselves in criminal activities. One point that works against the social

disorganization theory is that what are the environmental conditions that are available for the

individuals either as natives or immigrants? This is by the fact that immigrants record a lower

rate of criminal activities than the natives because they are used to the environment they are

living in. the availability of opportunities in the locality like job and employment also have a

factor in the engagement on criminal activities (Jones, 2017). In regions where there are little

opportunities for the youths will definitely attract more criminal activities which argue against

the theory.
