Running Head: C206 – Task 1

Western Governors University C206 – Task 1 2
Section A. Select a nonfictional leader who you feel has exhibited exemplary ethical conduct and do the following:
1.Discuss two ethical traits your chosen leader has demonstrated.
Ryan Smith is the founder of Qualtrics and the new owner of the Utah Jazz. As a fan of the Jazz, and having known a bit about Qualtrics, I was interested in the person who would take over the reins of “The House that Larry (Miller) Built.” In my search to learn more about Smith, I was impressed to learn the type of ethics that he portrays as a business owner, and perhaps more importantly, as a member of our community. The two ethical traits that immediately stand out are in Smith’s initiative for justice, in addition to his sense of humanity. Smith’s demonstration of justice has been one met with praise, but not without some scrutiny, in the surrounding community. He has been especially active in Utah combating racial injustice and inequity, such as personally matching donations of Qualtrics employees designated for legal defense funds to organizations like Black Lives Matter and the NAACP. This is a change that he says we need now, and he has taken the initiative in Utah to build a more supportive and inclusive community (Smith, 2020). Smith’s actions have enabled him to become
an important leader and voice on the forefront of a touchy social climate. While his ethics for justice are controversial to some, they are impactful for me personally, and I hope to continue learning from his example as I become a leader in healthcare. Smith’s sense of humanity is also evident in his actions to protect and support human rights of marginalized groups. One of his more recent projects involves Imagine Dragons singer Dan Reynolds and Apple CEO Tim Cook to support LGBTQ youth and their families. Together, they helped expand the community resources of the non-profit organization Encircle, an organization that provides “a lifeline to those facing suicidality, isolation, and depression, helping them build local community and forge a path forward” (Stauffer, 2021).
Smith’s effort toward human rights resonates with me heavily. In my view of the world, everyone has a right to be true to their self and have access to equal opportunities and support in their communities. That much has shown true in my ethical lens inventory assessment, where it states, “You wholeheartedly defend the right of every human to choose how they will live into their full potential as they seek their own expression of the good life” (EthicsGame - ELI, 2021). Seeing business leaders come together in powerful ways like Smith is inspiring, and in my opinion, will continue to benefit our community for the better. 2.Explain how your chosen leader has exhibited ethical conduct.
In a recent Utah legislature session, Ryan Smith voiced his concerns for a controversial bill that would bar transgender athletes in girls’ sports. “Smith was reportedly worried about the impact the legislation could have on transgender youth, stressing there are kids who don’t feel supported and the bill would not do anything to help with that perception” (Schott, 2021). His willingness to speak out on the issues resulted in the bill being tabled for further discussion, where Smith will likely be more involved to ensure compassionate treatment of LGBTQ youth.
