Do you believe that technology has indeed flattened the world in terms of providing
economic opportunity? Do you believe digital media have changed social interaction
and human connections? How do you think the economy in your country will change
as it moves closer to a technology-driven service economy?

I find it hard to believe that people think technology has flattened the world in terms of pro-
viding economic opportunity and although I'm aware of Friedman’s study, I can only disagree. I be-
lieve technology has improved the world, and whilst I think everything has pros and cons, the posi-
tives for technology certainly outweigh the negatives. For example, the internet can be useful in
terms of job-hunting and creating a business, making it easier to look for work and for promoting
your work. Before the introduction of such technology, getting information about available jobs
proved to be more difficult and now, it can be done at the click of a few buttons. In addition, work-
ing from home has become even more popular during these difficult times and the option wouldn’t
have been available for previous generations.
Digital media has changed social interaction and human connections. Personally, I left the
UK to live in China in 2017. My mother lives in the UK and my father lives in the USA. With the
use of technology, I'm able to communicate with them weekly. Through social media, my family
and friends from all over the world are able to keep up with my life updates and more importantly,
my daughter’s grandparents can see them growing up from afar. However, as mentioned, I believe
there are pros and cons for every argument and I think people should be careful with what they be-
lieve from digital media, and there is a reason for concern, “Sherry Turkle, a professor at MIT,
claims that social media is a metaphor for real life. We think it might change our lives for the better,
