1. Evaluate the extent to which federal policies and court decisions in the 1960s reflected
liberal ideals. Provide specific evidence to justify your answer.

During the 1960s, the government shifted to a more liberal state of mind following
the ideals of the liberals. Throughout this period of time, the main issues were
oppression as social and political inequality. The Democratic ideals were the main
reason for inequality among America. By following these liberal ideas, women, people of
color, and those of different races all got a chance to fight for their equality.
Federal policies and court decisions in the 1960s greatly reflected liberal ideals
as there were court cases made by the federal government, actions in legislation taken
by the federal government such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the use of federal
troops which helped encourage integration in public schools.
The federal government made successful court cases like Brown v. Board of
Education and Milliken v. Bradley. In May of 1954, during the case of Brown v. Board of
education, the Supreme Court came to a conclusion that segregation in public schools
was unconstitutional. As well as this, Milliken v. Bradley was one of the most significant
school desegregation cases and declared that a school district wouldn’t be held
responsible for segregation across the district licenses unless it is shown that the district
has engaged in a policy of deliberate segregation. Both these cases had a large impact
for bringing equality to America as they brought hope to people that America would one
day be free from racism and inequality.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended public segregation and also banned
discrimination over employment. It enabled all races and genders to have both political
and social equality. African Americans and women got the right to vote as well as get
the same education as a white person or a man. During this time many races came
together to fight for their equality. For example, Blacks, Latinos, and Asian Americans
would come together and fight for their equality. This reflected the liberal ideas as it was
adding culture while fighting for basic human rights.
During this time, President Eisenhower ordered federal troops to restore and
protect African American students. The federal government sent federal troops and
guards to allow integration in schools and public places. Because of this, America was
kept more integrated and inclusive causing it to be an equal place for everyone, no
matter what gender or race. All of these events helped bring America together in unity
allowing everyone a shot to live in equality.
