Section A - BIOL201 Biochemistry (answer all five questions)

1. Produce a diagram to illustrate the metabolism of pyruvate to CO2 in a typical
mammalian cell.

2. How do hormones control the activity of glycogen synthase and glycogen
phosphorylase?

3. What are the key regulation points in the glycolytic pathway and what are the
principal effectors of the enzymes?

4. List the ways that thrombin activity is controlled, attenuated or altered.

5. Describe, briefly, the structure of E. coli aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase),
and how the activity of this enzyme is regulated.


Section B - BIOL201 Biochemistry (answer one question only)

6. ATP synthesis is dependent on the rotation of the catalytic (β) subunits of the
enzyme, F0-F1 ATP synthase.

a) Describe two recent experiments that directly demonstrated the rotation of
the catalytic subunits of the ATP synthase during ATP synthesis. (40%)

b) Making reference to the structure of the F0 portion of the ATP synthase,
show how proton translocation through the F0 portion of the enzyme drives
the rotation of the catalytic subunits. (60%)


7. Describe the synthesis of saturated fatty acids.


8. When a blood vessel is damaged, clotting is initiated at the site of the damage
but not elsewhere. In due course, clotting at the site of the damage will stop and
the clot will be removed by natural processes. Discuss how these events are
achieved.
